ロー付け | Soldering Metals Together
ジュエリーの本体にピアスの針を取り付けたり、切れたネックレスチェーンをつなげたり、ジュエリー製作では金属同士をくっつける作業が必要な時があります。そんな時、一般的に行われている作業にことを「ロー付け」と呼びます。ロー付けとは溶接の一種ですが、くっつける素材そのものを溶かして接合する溶接とは違います。くっつけたい金属同士の間に別の溶けた金属(ロー材)を流し込むと、そのロー材が繋ぎとなり、別々の金属が接合されるのがロー付けです。
Attaching earring posts to the body of jewelry or reconnecting a broken necklace chain often requires soldering metals together. This process, commonly known as “soldering,” differs from welding, which involves melting the base metals to join them. Soldering involves flowing molten solder (a different metal) between the pieces to be joined, creating a bond without melting the base metals.
貴金属を溶かす | Melting Precious Metals
ジュエリーの素材となる貴金属が他の非貴金属と違う点は、比較的簡単に溶かして再利用できることにあります。特に銀や金は、通常のガスバーナーでも十分に溶かせるうえに、キレイにまとまります。この性質を利用して、他のジュエリー製作時に発生した端材を溶かしてまとめ、一塊りにしたあと別のジュエリー製作に利用したりすることができます。
One advantage of precious metals used in jewelry is their ability to be easily melted and reused. Silver and gold, in particular, can be melted effectively with a standard gas burner and reformed cleanly. This property allows us to collect and melt scraps generated during jewelry making, forming them into a new piece for further use.
焼きなまし | Annealing
ジュエリーの素材となる金属の特性として、叩いたり曲げたりなどの加工を行うと、徐々に硬くなるという性質があります。硬くなった金属のままで加工を続けると金属組織が崩れていき、最終的には壊れます。針金を何度も曲げ続けると、最後に折れる現象はそのためです。硬くなった金属を高温で熱することで、元の柔らかい状態に戻ります。
A characteristic of metals used in jewelry is that they harden as they are hammered or bent (work hardening). Continuing to work with hardened metal can cause it to become brittle and break. By heating the hardened metal to a high temperature, it can be returned to its original soft state.
